There are over 103,000 Americans awaiting solid organ transplant. Most people are awaiting kidney, liver or heart transplants. Forty-one percent of patients on the kidney transplant wait list are classed as obese or severely obese using the current definition; 36.7% of those awaiting a liver transplant and 40.6% of the heart transplant wait list are also obese or severely obese.
This community-engaged symposium will bring researchers, clinicians, allied health professionals and patients together to review and discuss the current state of knowledge regarding obesity and solid organ transplantation and generate a patient-centered research agenda, with specific research questions, informed by patients’ lived experience. The symposium will also afford an opportunity for attendees to hear about the challenges and successes of patients who were asked to lose weight prior to solid organ transplant.
The symposium is open to anyone interested in attending, but specifically targets clinicians, researchers and allied health professionals (i.e., social workers, nutritionists, dieticians) in the fields of kidney, liver and heart transplantation and obesity as well as patients with obesity awaiting solid organ transplantation and patients' families and care partners. Members of the general public who are interested in learning more about strategies for pre-transplant weight management are also welcome to attend.
